How to survive a sandstorm or a dust storm? 10 caring tips
- Seek shelter, minimize outdoor activities.
- Hydrate yourself.
- Get to higher ground.
- Wait out the storm. Don’t try to move through the storm; it’s much too dangerous.
- Avoid driving if possible, exit highway, turn off the engine (or you will get all that fine debris in your air filter).
- Cover you nose and mouth with a mask / a respirator / a dampened cloth around your nose and mouth to filter out dust and sand particles.
- Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the inside of your nostrils to prevent drying of your mucous membranes.
- If you don’t have goggles, shield your face with your arm as you move, then wrap a piece of cloth tightly around your head to protect your eyes and ears.
- Wear sunglasses and gloves along with long-sleeved shirts/pants and a brimmed hat
- Shield yourself from flying objects
