Safety in pregnancy

NO to caffeine.
Caffeine (found in coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate) readily enteres the baby’s bloodstream and accumulates in the brain.
When I knew that I was pregnant in my 1st pregnancy, I started to abstain from cofee, tea and soft drinks.

NO to alcohol. Beware of food with alcohol, e.g. tiramisu.

NO to chemicals.
Organic solvents used in dry cleaning can pass through placenta.
Pregnant women who are exposed to organic solvents at the workplace (e.g. laboratory technicians, factory workers, professionals artists / chemists) may also place their developing baby at a greater risk of developing birth defects.
Avoid chemical finishes e.g. stain repellents, flame retardants, paint / DIY products which emit fumes.
Avoid chemical air fresheners.
Avoid heavily scented cleaning products e.g. dishwashing liquids, floor cleaners, washing powders, pesticides.

NO to hair dyes / perms.
Remember that pregnant mothers are blooming beautifully, you do not need to change the color of your hair to feel beautiful.

NO to cigarette.
Avoid smokers. Exposure to as few as 2 hours a day of 2nd hnd smoke also significantly increases the risk of having a low-birth-weight baby.

NO to deep-tissue massage e.g. foot reflexology, Shiatsu.
No to sp treatments that raise pregnant mothers’ body temperature e.g. body wraps, sauna.

YES to exercise.
Walking is highly recommended for at least the 1st 2 trimesters.

When in doubt, always consult your doctor.

Do-not-eat food list (up to 100 days after giving birth)

No prawn.
No shrimps / no dishes cooked with shrimps-based chili.
No shrimps-based chili (aka belacan).
No sashimi.
No cockles.
No cuttlefish / squid / sotong.
No crab.
No mackerel.

No unknown mixed meat^ including dim sum siu mai, har gow, mixed meat, bakwa.
No outside noodle-based food (concern about the type of oil being used for cooking).

No cabbage (because it will wash away the Chinese medicine).
No napa cabbage 大白菜.
No kimchi*.
No radish 白萝卜.
No kangkong (Ipomoea aquatica) / water spinach / water morning glory.

No watermelon.

* After 100 days, the chili in kimchi can balance the cold white cabbage, tentatively add ginger reduce the cold of white cabbage.

^ mixed meat may have neck part of pork. The old says 有毒.

Note: The list is a subset of do-not-eat food for confinement, which has more food that one should not eat according to the Eastern tradition and knowledge.

How to pump breast milk hand free?

Use dual pump for faster result.
Wear nursing bra.
(optional) Put napkin beneath to prevent leakage into your clothes.
Use (a min of 2) clothespin to clip the pump part to bra,
use more cloethespin if necessary.
must ensure that the lower part of breast shield has no room for leakage.
Use a (baby) bolster / pillow at the base of the collection bottles so that the heavy breast milk filled bottles do not sag your breasts.
Use a sling bag to put the motor for body motion of mother.

Different expectations from children to parents

As a new Mom,
naturally …
I strengthen my friendships with friends who are Moms,
I make new friends with other Moms.

A good friend of mine,
J shared with me on the different expectations from children to parents.

J’s husband has a sister who lives with the parents of J’s husband,
and the parents of J’s husband are taking care of the children of J’s sister (the nieces-in-law of J).
it seems that J’s family have the expectation that "grandparents must take care of the grandchildren."

A conversation between J & J’s husband
(well, I do not know what their exact words, so I just share based on my memory talking to J).

J : Honey, let say in a hypothetical scenario, if Daddy & Mommy (refers to J’s husband’s parents) want to take time off to go holidays seeing the world for e.g. 3 months, do you think my sister-in-law will allow?

J’s husband : I don’t know. May be not because nobody will take care of her children.

J shared that when his parents went overseas for J’s wedding,
his parents could only come for 3 days,
because they must take care of J’s nieces-in-law.

J’s husband grew up in a family in which parents are taking care of their children a lot,
for example,
his parents wash his clothes,
cook his herbal medicine,
cleans his room,
irons his office attire,
bath the grandchildren,
instead of letting J’s sister-in-law to do it,
while his parents give a lot of comfort to their children,
they may somehow deprive some opportunities to be independent from their children.

J does not think that this is wrong,
it is just different way of parents expressing their love.

J’s husband once remarked : Your parents seem to love their children less than mine.
J gently replied : Honey, our parents love their children differently in their own ways.
Your parents give you comfortable lives,
help with a lot of little things and house chore.
My parents teach me how to survive in the world on my own,
simply because they cannot take care of me forever,
so they gave me an early training.
(Note : like me, J has led an independence life away from her parents since her teenager days.)

Of course, as a woman and a friend of J,
I side J more than J’s husband,
this is human nature.

Personally (in the opinion of Blueroselady),
parents are responsible of taking care of their children until the children turn 18 or 21 years old.
children are responsible of taking care of their parents (till the end of the parents’ lives) once children start earning an income.

As an adult, we should not expect our parents to take care of our children.
Of course,
if our parents want to do so,
they are welcome,
but we must not insist it.

My opinion is influenced by Asian concept of filial piety,
yet is modern enough by taking account the freedom concept of the West
(For example,
have no expectation for our parents to take care of their grandchildren).

My confinement notes

Jin Jinhua: a consultant acupuncturist at Raffles Chinese Medicine.
Dr Lee Le Ye: a neonatologist at NUH.
Motherhood September 2006 magazine.

Childbirth results in deficiency of QI and BLOOD in the mother’s body.
1. consume tonics and nutritious food. Note: Caesarean mother should refrain from too much nutritious food and tonics in the 1st week because the open wounds from surgery are still healing and infection could set it if body is too "heaty". Tips by Jin.
2. consume iron supplements. Tips by Lee.

Adapt to mother’s "body type".
A mother who is naturally "heatier": do not eat too much nutritious food and tonics. Do not wear too much / too warm. If body is too heated up, will increase risk of infection of open wounds.
A mother who is naturally "cool" should consume more nutritious food and tonics. Dress more warmly.

Drink fish papaya soup to boost breastmilk supply.
Avoid too salty food to prevent water retention.
Avoid "cold" food. Why? can weaken stomach / digestive system, result in coagulation of lochia.
e.g. of "cold" food : cold drinks, cucumber, cabbage, pineapple, citrus fruit
Avoid food that cause wind, e.g. sweet potatoes, jackfruit, pumpkin, cucumber, nuts, legumes. Tips by Motherhood.
Avoid food that make you sweat because sweating expands the pores and expanded pores will allow wind to enter the new mother’s body. Tips by Motherhood.
If sweating, must change clothes. Tips by Mum S.

A breastfeeding mother needs only ~600-800 calories more / day mothers who bottle-feed their babies. Tips by Motherhood.

drink lots of nutritious fluids, e.g. red date tea.
can also drink chicken essence, other healthy soups.
water is allowed (Jin).
lochia = the normal uterine discharge of blood, tissue, mucus from vagina after childbirth.

WEAR SLIPPERS. Do not let soles of feet to touch the floor.

Must maintain a normal temperature to prevent heatstroke.
Can use air-con or fan.
Room must have fresh air and allow mother to cool down.

In tropical climate, Keep your body clean by wiping with warm / herbal water.

In tropical climate, If you need to wash hair, dry it immediately to avoid catching a cold.

Note: the rule of not to wash hair and bathe during the entire confinement period probably originated in China during olden times when water facilities were scarce and contain bacteria.

Causes of rheumatism (Motherhood): wear & tear resulting in the inflammation / degeneration of muscles / bones.
Causes of headaches (Motherhood): high blood pressure, stress, insufficient rest.

How to prevent backache (Motherhood)?
1. sleep on a firm mattress.
2. exercise regularly.
3. do not slouch when waking / sitting on the couch.
4. do not allow ourselves to become overweight.

If reading helps us to RELAX, try reading aloud to our baby.
Nothing soothes a baby more than feeling the closeness of his mother & hearing her voice. Tips by Motherhood.

because new mother’s joints are weak and loose.
You need not lie in bed all the time.
Do not be sedentary to prevent blood clots in the legs.
Steer clear of water.
Do not mop the floor.
Do not do laundry.
Get more rest.
Stay at home.

Binding your belly only prevents the muscles from sagging.
To trim your tummy, exercise and eat sensibly.

How to photograph your little ones (babies, toddlers, children)?

Accept that we cannot pose babies, so use street photography approach, i.e. ALWAYS have CAMERA READY.

Take MORE PICTURES to increase the probability of getting good pictures.

Get down to their level (do not dwarf them).

Capture their many faces / emotional states / mood.

CLOSE-UP for their tiny body parts (hands, feet, eyes, mouth, head / face).

Use NATURAL LIGHT from a window to light your baby.
The outdoor sun can be harsh for your baby.
If you want to take pictures outdoors, do it in the shade. SHADE can act as a good diffuser.

How to endure the unendurable?

These are examples of events are challenging us:
the death of loved ones
failing ill (severe illnesses)
failed relationships e.g. divorce, being written off by friends that one treasures
bankruptcy / loss
failures / defeats / major disappointments
labor / giving birth
wars / riots
natural disasters

Who has never experienced at least one of those events?
The answer is nobody.

We must equip ourselves with the ability to endure the unendurable.
How to master the art of endurance?

Prayer. Believe that God is always with us.
Positive affirmations. Believe that the mother nature is taking care of us, the entire universe is protecting us through the law of divine protection.

Use the power of subconscious mind, especially the passing over and visualization techniques. When I was a kid, I learned to focus on the scenery picture in my dentist’s room, to distract my mind from the pain of my tooth being extracted. I imagine I visited the place with hilly green pasture and snow-capped mountains at the back. Indeed, before I was 30 years old, I have been to Switzerland (a place that seems fit to the scenery) thrice.

Relax and release all your burdens to the invincible (God, mother nature, universe).
Concentrate / focus on your breathing. Use alternate one-nostril technique.
Listen to soothing music.
Read inspiring words.
Meditate / self-hypnotize.

See the big picture in space and time. In X amount of time, we will experience less pain. Time heals. All things are passing.

Think of our role models. What are our role models going to do in such situation? Bring the matters to our daily counselor meeting, ask for their opinions.
For delivery, I will think of how my mother lovingly brought me to the world. If she can, so can I.

Master the art of detachment.

Learn a lesson, especially for sufferings and pains from failed relationships or failures in school or work. By enduring our pains, we progress to the next level of our lives; from a child to an adult, people may experience the pain of growing up; from a single woman to a mother, women will experience the pain of birth.

Understand that things are complementing. If we do not know what ugliness is, we will never appreciate what beauty is. If we have never experienced pain, we will not appreciate our pleasure or joy.

Remember that if you are willing to endure more pain than the person next to you, winning will be your only option. Mentor MR told me (when i I was in teen struggling on my own without my parents) 吃得苦中苦,方为人上人.

Benefits of being pregnant

Growing life. Loving someone without being able to see him yet.
People are nicer to me. Parents give me nutritious food, Mom bought me new maternity wear. Boss is less demanding. Kind strangers give me a seat on public train.
I am allowed to eat more by my man. Normally, if we share food, he will eat 2/3 and I eat 1/3.
No longer afraid of cold. I used to be afraid of low temperature, when people wear 2 layers, I have to wear 3 layers.
Enlarged breasts. My bra size increases by n_now – n_before = 4, cup size increases by 2 alphabets.
