Decluttering in autumn 2013

leave a comment »

I love to remove clutters (declutter),
it cleans my physical, spiritual, and emotional life.

Decluttering allows us to realize that life is full of delightful treasures, if we take a moment to look around.

Cool stuff:
# DNA-based computers. Leonard Adleman.
# Self-tracking / health-tracking devices. Up wristband.
# portfolio career.
# What heals the soul, heals the mind and body as well.

Interesting quotes:
# Time is most definitely a thief.
Questions: What is the longest yet the shortest? What is the fastest yet the slowest?
Answer: TIME

Useful tips:
# Be careful! Over use of medication (e.g. paracetamol), either intentionally or accidentally, may damage liver.
# To fight pimples and minimize scar, I have used tea tree oil and aloe vera.
# Try to move after sitting for 45 minutes, e.g. while travelling on long-distance flight. In terms of radiation, 7 hour flight ~= an X-ray session.

Inspiring people:
# Bernie S. Siegel
# Christine Ong of UBS Wealth Management Singapore
# Reene Ho-Phang

Some random muses and reflections …

@~@ On life
An event that at first seem to be unfortunate / undesirable may actually provide surprising advantages, e.g. autumn 2007 (that affects the next 7 years).

@~@ On being unique
It is a great thing to be unique or different.
The grown ups often tell any kid (e.g. a 6 year old) that it is great to be yourself.
Be unique.
However, the goal of many grown-ups in life is to fit in.

@~@ On career
A career for life vs portfolio careers.

@~@ On gifts
Some people (e.g. KS) value expensive gifts. In case of KS, he acknowledged the hardship in his early life.
Some people (e.g. KF) value heartfelt letter of appreciation much more than expensive gifts. Possibly, people who are relatively richer than me in material wealth and assume leadership roles (e.g. my direct boss in 2013) have similar perspectives as KF does.

@~@ On travel destinations
Some destinations wow me and are perhaps best to be visited once over a short period of time (instead of residing there) in entire life, due to extreme weather conditions or high living expenses. For example, Cappadocia and Antarctica.

What’s next?
# Deal constructively with criticism. Give constructive criticism.
# What are you going to do for the rest of your life? (A question I wrote in a note taken in Switzerland)
# DO, don’t dream.

Happiness exercise: write a short introduction about yourself

leave a comment »

In a series of happiness exercises, I brainstorm novel and creative ideas of doings that can boost up our happiness. Today exercise is simple: write a short introduction about yourself. You can memorize it to remind yourself when you experience negative emotions, to make new friends and build new relationships, or simply to make an elevator pitch.

Here is a brief introduction about myself.

I am an ordinary woman with a BIG dream to give extraordinary service to others.

My love include life, family, stories and writing. I dream of writing a book that is enlisted in The New York Times Non-Fiction Best Sellers.

Everyday, I give my best to live and learn so that I can share useful tips about education and entrepreneurship / business,
that are thoughtful, helpful, inspiring, necessary, and kind.

I am also interested in people, travel, food (especially Asian food and Italian desserts), visual arts, movies and creative ideas.

Counting my blessings, I am grateful for being a mother, lifelong student, storyteller, researcher and marketer; and having good health and more wealth than the yesterday-me.

Thank you very much for being interested in me!

Please keep in touch and feel free to comment.

What Will Matter by Michael Josephson

leave a comment »

Thank you Michael Josephson for sharing “What Will Matter”.
Herein, I include my reflections in italic.

Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end.
There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days.

All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.
Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.
Blueroselady: adopting an attitude of 富贵于我如浮云 can give us serenity.
It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.
Your grudges, resentments, frustrations and jealousies will finally disappear.

So too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and to-do lists will expire.
The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.
Blueroselady: 是非成败转头空.青山依旧在,几度夕阳红.

生活只有两种选择:重新出发,做自己生命的主角,抑或停留在原地,做别人的配角。
Be the main actor of your life!

It won’t matter where you came from or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end.
It won’t matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.
Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.

So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?

What will matter is not what you bought but what you built,
Blueroselady: to build = to create / invent / innovate
not what you got but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success butyour significance.
What will matter is not what you learned but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched,
empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.
What will matter is not your competence but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew,
but how many will feel a lasting loss when you’re gone.
What will matter is not your memories but the memories of those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn’t happen by accident.
It’s not a matter of circumstance but of choice.
Choose to live a life that matters.
Blueroselady: You have tremendous intrinsic strength to choose the life that you want to live. Be the master of your soul, be the captain of your ship.
Believe in yourself!

Are you / your loved one an INFJ? ~40 simple descriptions to understand them

with 2 comments

To know your personality type,
you can do an instant self-guided assessment here.

Since a good friend of mine is INFJ and I would love to understand her,
I have been highly motivated to learn (and now share) about INFJ people.

INFJ = Protector = Counselor = Confidant = Healer = Foreseer Developer.

Only 1% of the population has INFJ personality (the most rare personality type).

Dear INFJ,
“You are not here merely to make a living.
You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply,
with greater vision,
with a finer spirit of hope and achievement.
You are here to enrich the world,
and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.”
Woodrow Wilson

Famous people who are INFJ:
Amelie Poulain
Carl Jung
D Yuri Zhivago – Doctor Zhivago
Eleanor Rossevelt
Goethe
Jimmy Carter
Mahatma Gandhi
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mother Teresa
Nelson Mandela
Nicole Kidman
Oprah Winfrey
Plato

and fictional characters of INFJs:
Luke Skywalker
Jane Eyre

Bloggers who declare themselves as INFJs:
Jennifer Zhang
Barbara Coz

@~@ live with integrity / have strong value systems / Highly principled.
@~@ is independent.
@~@ is creative (artistic / original / INFJ live in a world of hidden meanings and possibilities).
@~@ INFJs often think by way of images ; their minds are of visual nature.
@~@ When engrossed in creative flow / Csikszentmihalyi’s flow , INFJ experience themselves in perfect synchrony with the universe. Some have described this as a trance (an altered state of consciousness in which they morph into a vessel of creative energy). Others have likened it to divine inspiration or being visited by muses.
@~@ is visionary / idealistic / future-oriented.
@~@ are constantly in a state of self-renewal ; believe in constant growth and don’t often take time to revel in their accomplishments.
@~@ constantly seeking meaning and purpose in everything.
@~@ determined (they rarely stray from their vision no matter what it is / they don’t believe in compromising their ideals).
@~@ devoted.
@~@ hardworking.
@~@ generally “doers” as well as great dreamers.
@~@ deep / complex (INFJ has complex feelings & take great care to express them).
@~@ cooperative in reaching their goals.
@~@ gentle / easy going (although they have very high expectations of themselves).
Gandhi remarked that “In a gentle way, you can shake the world”.
@~@ is an excellent listener with almost infinite patience. In the words of infjoe, “Just because I’m quiet doesn’t mean I’m not listening. I’m busy focusing on the things that aren’t being said.”
@~@ INFJs are old souls. Many grow up feeling wiser than would be predicted by their chronological age.
@~@ natural nurturer / focus on human potentials.
@~@ altruistic / love to contribute to welfare of the human beings.
@~@ INFJ enjoy the chance to share their wisdom, theories, and insights.
@~@ natural leader ; although they are not generally visible leaders, they quietly exerting their influence behind the scenes with their families, friends, and colleagues. To quote Susan Cain, “Quiet leadership is not an oxymoron.”
@~@ caring / warm / helpful / compassionate / service-oriented / can readily ingratiate 讨好 themselves to others.
@~@ insightful ; artful / canny understanding of people & situations ; INFJ can become aware of another’s emotions or intentions-good or evil-even before that person is conscious of them. This ‘mind-reading’ can take the form of feeling the hidden distress or illnesses of others to an extent which is difficult for other personality types to comprehend.
@~@ INFJ are quick to differentiate the “real and authentic” from the “fake and contrived”. INFJ can ‘X-ray’ other personalities / they can “read” people.
@~@ Value deep, authentic relationships.
@~@ highly intuitive / spontaneous within themselves.
@~@ INFJs concern themselves with forging new connections and reconciling opposites by way of their Intuition.
@~@ focus their attention on the big picture rather than the details, and on future possibilities rather than immediate realities.
@~@ strong empathy ; INFJ have strong ability to take into themselves the feelings of others, hence they can be hurt rather easily by those around them, which, perhaps, is one reason why they tend to be private people, mutely withdrawing from human contact.
@~@ protective of their inner selves, sharing only what they choose to share when they choose to share it ; reserved about expressing their true selves.
@~@ INFJs tend to be quiet ; they expend energy in social situations (whereas extraverts gain energy).
@~@ orderly / systematic (in their outer world) ; INFJ constantly define and re-define the priorities in their lives.
@~@ INFJ are system builders; most INFJ systems are founded on human beings and human values.
@~@ Can work logically and rationally – use their intuition to understand the goal and work backwards towards it.

@~@ believe in their intuition & tend to ignore other people’s opinions. Solutions: seek trusted mentors / Jedi / collaborators.
@~@ cannot tolerate conflict very well. can easily burn out / suffer depression. Solutions: develop strong inner strength & inner peace.
@~@ a perfectionist who doubts that they are living up to their full potential ; there’s always something else they should be doing to improve themselves and the world around them.
Solutions:
1. be gentle with yourself.
2. be mindful of the intrisic desire of INFJ to constantly improve their romantic partner which may be perceived as being naggy, know when to apply Siberian North Rail Road technique (Stope, Breathe, Notice, Reflect, Respond).
@~@ highly sensitive. Solutions: learn how to center & ground yourself while realizing other people’s problems aren’t always INFJ’s to help fixing.

@~@ INFJs seek high quality, in-depth relationships.
@~@ INFJ see love relationship as an opportunity to connect and grow.
@~@ INFJ enjoy relationships when they are improving and changing, but not stagnation.
@~@ INFJ’s natural partner is the ENTP, or the ENFP. INFJ is also compatible with INTJ.
Why ENFP?The inner world of INFJs in many ways resembles the outer world of ENFPs. It is playful, colorful, mischievous, and daring.

When other people don’t get INFJ, they see INFJ as manipulative / weak / unstable.

Suitable career for INFJ:
entrepreneur / marketer.
artist (e.g. designer, photographer).
scientist where they make use of their intuition.
medical Doctors / dentists / alternative medicine guru (e.g. Chiropractor, Reflexologist).
psychologists / psychiatrists.
Counselors / Social Workers.
teacher / professor / trainer.
Child Care / Early Childhood Development.
writer.

At work, INFJ stay motivated and happy … as long as they are working toward a dream they support.
INFJ are not good at dealing with minutia or very detailed tasks. The INFJ will either avoid such things, or else go to the other extreme and become enveloped in the details to the extent that they can no longer see the big picture. An INFJ who has gone the route of becoming meticulous about details may be highly critical of other individuals who are not.
Life is not necessarily easy for the INFJ, but they are capable of great depth of feeling and personal achievement.

What is really important?

with 2 comments

A mentor of mine (Uncle Carlson) suggested that I asked myself EVERYDAY,
"What is really important to me?"

Many times I ignore what I have already had, yet desire so much things that I have not achieved or contributed.
This is not very good for my inner life because I am always feeling of LACK.
I started to write a gratitude list, the contents can be very simple but include things/people/acts that touch my heart.

So, what is really important to me (in May 2012)?
1. My life (Dad always warns me to be careful, e.g. when I go travel to watch out for traffic). As long as we are still alive, we can love, learn, laugh, and make others’ lives happier. I love my life. My life is my amusement, the most interesting drama I have watched.
2. My health (I need my good health to be able to live in fullfilling ways). This means I will eat well, rest well (not overwork though I have such a tendency), and spend time for my inner health. When people are healthy, people often take health for granted.
3. My dream. To kick start is the project T2 to change lives and touch hearts. This is not about me, but for others whom I care and love. I have been given a lot, it is time for me to give something to the world. I believe that my dream is God’s purpose for me in this life.
4. My family. Currently, my family comprises my man. Everyday (every morning after I wake up and every night before I sleep), I tell him that I love him, and I really mean so. Having withstanding my worries for the past decade, I strive to make my parents to be at peace about me, knowing that I am an independent person. Indeed, this year I celebrate half of lives living away from parents who love and protect us. I love and protect myself.

The followings can be important at some phases of my life:
1. education. I completed my formal education. I feel relieved, after years of being a humble student. I refer to humility in the sense that a student normally has no earning power, and now as a working adult I can earn a living. However, I still keep the humility in learning, to keep on learning from every possible individual. Now, I do not intend to pay for any tuition fee to get any degree, I would rather to use the available fund to provide bursaries / scholarships. Most importantly, my formal education has allowed me to believe that I CAN LEARN ANYTHING that I am interested and committed to, on my own, from anyone / any expert in the fields.
2. career. Once, I thought that my current job and career was what I want for my entire life, but everyone has the need to grow, no matter how much productivity, knowledge, income, and network that he or she has at this moment. In 2012, my boss and his boss do not impress me. I do not mean to be an ungrateful chap. They are kind towards me and have helped me, but years down the road, I do not want to be like them. Sadly, some people associate their worth to their career / job. When they lose their career / job, they lose their meanings of life.
3. money. Money is important, but not everything. I need money to eat, to have clothes, to have a shelter, and to travel (Chinese people called these 4 basic needs YiShiZhuXing). I believe that I will have enough money throughout my life, to support myself and my children (until they reach the age of 18). I also believe that I will have abundance of wealth that I can share with others.
4. friendship. All of us human beings are social animals, including the most introvert people whom I have ever encountered. I am grateful for my friends, they add color to my life. Most friends have been nice to me, few ones hurted me yet I learned from them not to do things that they did towards othes. I have many friends who confide in me. They believe in me because I do not gossip around, I am a good listener, and I can give effective advices / solutions (when they ask for). My list of friends goes beyond 4 digits, also thanks to my nomadic life. I am a friend of people from multiple corners of the world: North and South America, Asia, Middle East, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and a friend even went to visit Antarctica. One day, a friend of mine will be a traveller beyond the earth. I love my friends, irregardless of their socio economic status and their personalities. I believe that my friends comprise people of 16 personalities of BMTI indicators, though I have never really studied them in such a way. My approach was to understand them. I am helpful. No matter how, I am always available for my friends whom I can help best. If not, I would refer them to someone who is best to help them. Given the numerous friends I have, who can be awake at different timings as I do, I accept the fact that I cannot keep in touch with them very frequently. Most importantly, I pray for their well beings, happiness and health.

How to engage science into life?

with one comment

Science surrounds us, like it or not.
Science allows us to study the world around us and learn how things work.

TRUTH
I do not believe one source of news.
I gather multiple inputs before I arrive at important decisions.

PRECISION
in cooking. I cook using timer. Once, I had a timer from Daiso. Two friends who work in biotech industry gave me timers of abcam and Promega. Thank you!
The timer allows me to multitask without worrying that I over-steam / over-boil my food.

EVIDENCE-based DOCumentation
I self-analyze myself, my health.
I love reading, watching documentaries, listening to insightful talks, talking to inspiring people.

DISCUSSIONs
I love to exchange ideas to acquire and share constructive suggestions.

TRAVEL / TRIP
not necessarily overseas trips, but I love a journey to places where I have never been to.
A trip to museum / nature / botanical garden.
Listen, see, breathe, touch (with care and caution), record (write / take photos / sketch / make videos).

The philosophy of life

with 2 comments

A note shared by a friend who is a teacher.

All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
Always choose life.
Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age.
Believe in miracles.
Cry with someone. It’s  more healing than crying alone.
Don’t audit life. Show up and MAKE THE MOST OF LIFE now.
DON’T COMPARE your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all  about.
Envy is a waste  of time. You already have all you need.
Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But DON’T WORRY; God never blinks.
Forgive everyone everything.
Frame every so-called  disaster with these  words: In 5 years,  WILL THIS MATTER?
Get outside every day. MIRACLES are waiting everywhere.
Get rid of anything that isn’t USEFUL, BEAUTIFUL or JOYFUL.
GOD LOVES YOU because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.
Growing old beats the alternative — dying  young.
However good or bad  a situation is, it will change.
If we all threw  our problems in a  pile and saw everyone  else’s, we’d grab ours  back.
It’s NEVER TOO LATE to have a HAPPY CHILDHOOD. But the 2nd childhood is up to you and no one else.
It’s OK to get angry with God. God can take it.
It’s OK to let your children see you cry.
Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
Make PEACE with your past so it won’t screw up the present and future.
No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
OVER PREPARE, then go with the flow.
Pay off your credit cards every month.
SAVE for retirement starting with your 1st paycheck.
Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
The best is yet  to come.
The most important sex organ is the BRAIN.
Time heals almost everything. Give time, time.
What other people think  of you is none of your business…
Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you STRONGer.
When in doubt, just take the next small step.
When it comes to  going after what you love in life, DON’T  TAKE NO for an answer.
Yield (CONTRIBUTE).
You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your family, parents, lover will. Stay in touch.
