Tips from a doctor who treats cancer patients

leave a comment »

It took me a lot of courage to read the articles on cancer, totaling up to ~14000 words.

I shed my tears, but I will be strong.

  1. Look fwd to everyday as a precious gift of God’s grace.
  2. Dear patients, please resist the temptation to give in to fear and panic.
  3. Never give up!
  4. We do not know MANY THINGS about cancer – a disease more ancient than human beings. But I believe that everyday we gain new knowledge, discover new gems in science – gems that allow patients to live longer.
  5. cancer cells that multiply faster also tend to die faster. Beware of cell death by products e.g. uric acid – can affect kidney.
  6. $ can bring happiness and health. If you have $, you can provide better treatment to your loved ones. According to APT private hospitals e.g. ME seem to provide better measurements of treatment than public hospitals.
  7. Akin to constantly glancing at our rear-view mirror in order to travel safely ahead, doctors must review and reflect on what they could have done better. Do you and I review in our profession so that we can give our best through our talents?
  8. The cost of specialization and subspecialization is specialist doctors are good at their specific fields but can be at the expense of general medicine. Both BREADTH and DEPTH are essential.
  9. Some policies (e.g. hospice policy) can be interpreted subjectively (to your favor).
  10. In increasingly litigious society, doctors are afraid of being sued. Blueroselady still has faith in our doctors. Their desire to help their patients will enable them to overcome the fear.
  11. Cancer cannot transmit through bodily fluids, e.g. sex.
  12. Sex will not cause recurrence of cancer.
  13. Aches may be a sign of cancer, so please pay attention to our bodies. Be disciplined in going for check-ups.
  14. Common causes of anemia in men: blood loss from GI tract (e.g. piles, peptic ulcers, stomach cancer, colon cancer).
  15. Beware that PET scans often (up to 50%) give false negatives (mis-detect the presence) of liver-originated cancers.
  16. Stopping chemotherapy may increase the risk of drug resistance. Perseverance?
  17. Chemotherapy is not recommended for cancer patients of Zubrod 3 or 4 status; yet beating the odds is still possible. Zubrod 3 means need to spend more than 50% of time in bed. Zubrod 4 means bed ridden.
  18. For bone cancer, chemo 1st then surgery / amputation. Why? (a) to prevent early spreading to lungs (b) more time to find a suitable bone.
  19. Pregnancy and advanced breast cancer are not rare. The good news is cancer cells generally do not cross placenta, except in some blood cancers cases e.g. leukemia, lymphoma.
  20. Testosterone (male hormone) is beneficial to inhibit breast cancer growth.
  21. The monoclonal antibody bevacizumab reduces blood supply to (ovarian) cancer.
  22. * to allow family members the time to rest and revitalize, family members can take turn to care for the patients.

Thank you: Dr Ang

How to achieve pregnancy (Billings method)?

with 3 comments

This post is a continuation from the previous post.

What are the phases of the cycle?

Menstruation – infertile phase – fertile phase – peak / ovulation (1 day only!) – infertile phase – menstruation – … and so on.

Infertile phase

  1. after menstruation.
  2. dry / sticky mucus.
  3. known as BIP (Basic Infertile Phase).

Fertile phase

  1. When does it begin? a change from the pattern of infertile phase.
  2. Initial mucus may be cloudy. Do not worry. It is the release of plug that prevents sperms to get into uterus.
  3. Initial 3 days: avoid intercourse. Why? Because your estrogen is still building up. You are not reaching peak yet.
  4. How long is fertile mucus? ~ 6 days before ovulation.
  5. Most obvious (egg-white like) strings are 2-3 days before peak.

Ovulation occurs at the PEAK of fertility.

Signs of peak:

  1. the last day of fertile mucus / slippery sensation.
  2. not necessarily the day of most mucus.
  3. sensation of slippery (wet) is important.

Signs of post-peak

  1. 3 consecutive days after peak, you feel dryness or not-slippery mucus.

How to chart?

  1. sensation (slippery vs sticky or dry) is more importance than appearance.
  2. chart the most fertile sign for that day (e.g. if you feel lumpy, pastry, stringy at different time of today, chart stringy).
  3. consistency. use same word to describe the same mucus.
  4. do not search inside the vagina, which is always wet.

Note:

  1. sparse mucus throughout cycle is infertile sign. Please see a doctor.
  2. douches, vaginal deodorant, lubricative jellies decrease fertility.
  3. severe menstrual pain, endometriosis? Please see a doctor.

God, thank you for letting me to learn about the Billing method so that we can attempt better to have a baby.

God, please also help other couples who are trying to conceive.

Mother Mary please pray for all of us.

How to conceive and have a baby?

with 4 comments

God, please help us to have a baby.
A baby whom we can shower our love and energy to.
A baby who can live harmoniously with us.
A baby who will bring our relationship more loving that ever.

To share what I know to aspiring mothers and fathers, the info below will be useful before you jump to the tips.

What is ovulation?
the release of a mature egg.

When is ovulation?
~ 14 days (can range from 13-16 days) before the next expected menstruation.

What is the life span of a mature egg?
only 24 hours!

What is the life span of sperms?
HEALTHY sperms deposited in the female genital tract can only survive for 48-72 hours! (2-3 days)!

TIPS
1. have sex during the ovulation (fertile period).
2. have sex every other day during the fertile period.

Advanced TIPS (more $ will be involved)
1. ovulation scan to increase accurate prediction of ovulation.
2. intraurine insemination (introduce specially selected good sperm into the womb around ovulation period).
3. induced ovulation (for women without regular menstruation).
IVF (in-vitro fertilisation)

Requirement for the success of intraurine insemination:
viable fallopian tubes.
Fallopian tubes = canals that transport the mature eggs from ovary to the womb (uterus).

TIPS for East Asian (Chinese, Korean) couples who desire Dragon babies:
May 2012 is the last month to conceive to have a Dragon baby because the Dragon Year ends Feb 9, 2013.

Good Luck! I also pray for all aspiring fathers and mothers, with lots of hugs from Blueroselady.

Pray and Back-up

leave a comment »

@Mar 15, 2011
I feel sad about what happen in Japan. They seem to suffer from multitude of disasters. Earthquakes, tsunami, nuclear radiation, and volcano eruption.
I admire and respect those rescue workers, risking their lives to save others. Some of my friends went to Aceh and Sichuan to aid, they are very kind-hearted and courageous. You all are heroes!

What is the most important?
My father said that we only live once, we have to cherish our lives. Be careful when we travel (cross the road, do not overdrink, rush for train / bus). While we are careful road users, others may not, so we have to be precautious againsts others too.
My father prepared a rope so that in the event of fire, we could climb down using it.
My mother experienced her home being burnt down from fire. Except from clothes that she calmly managed to wrap around using large bed cloth, she lost everything, including her childhood photos.
With today technologies, back-up our photos (memories) online or in e-mails to your closed kins / friends (if you want to keep them private).
I also suggest you to back-up your birth cert, identity card, travel documents (e.g. passport), baptism, and academic certs.
Academic certs are required for job / further studies applications.

We cannot back-up our lives, we can only pray more to God and be more careful.
Realizing how vulnerable we are, we can only live our lives with diligence, perseverance, respect, humility.
Count our blessings and be grateful.
Always have faith and hope, in God, in a better future!

A lesson from April 2011.
How to prevent data loss?
Back-up your files in computer:
(1) email them to your inbox.
(2) back-up at thumbdrive / to other computer using .sh file which runs multiple scp commands.
(3) perhaps in future, auto sync across computers.

Prayer: to and for my love

ETIQUETTE BETWEEN HUSBANDS + WIVES

Let the rebuke be preceded by a KISS.
Do not require a request to be repeated.
Never should both be angry at the same time.

Never neglect the other, for all the world beside.
Let each strive to always accommodate the other.

Let the angry word be answered only with a kiss.
Bestow your warmest sympathies in each other’s trials.
Make your criticism seldom, and in the most loving manner possible.
Make no display of the sacrifices you make for each other.
Never make a remark calculated to bring ridicule upon the other.

Never deceive; confidence, once lost, can never be wholly regained.
Always use the most GENTLE and LOVING WORDS when addressing each other.
Let each study what pleasure can be bestowed upon the other during the day.

Always leave home with a TENDER GOOD-BYE and LOVING WORDS. They may be the last.
Consult and avise together in all that comes within the experience and sphere of each individuality.
Never reproach the other for an error which was done with a good motive and with the best judgment at the time.

A WEDDING DAY PRAYER

O God, who has blessed marriage with the holiness
and dignity of a sacraement, grant us as a husband and a wife:

The prudence to recognize and the courage to avoid the folly / foolishness of pettiness, the cruel wounds of unkindness, and the cancer of mistrust.

The maturity to act and react as adults, especially in disagreeable situations.

The patience and generosity in forgiving human weaknesses and failings and in accepting and loving each other as we are, not as we might wish one another to be.

May in-laws, money, drink or religion never be a cause or source of unhappiness.

May the personality of each be blessed with a genuine sense of humour, a complete openness, and a sincere determination to understand each other.

May our love for one another be entirely unselfish, and may we find our greatest happiness in pleasing each other.

And finally, may the fingertips of Christ scatter upon us the rice of a thousand blessings, especially that our home, no matter how lavish or humble, will always be a little suburb of heaven, a place where love reigns and God’s peace abides. Amen.

LIGUORIAN

Dearest God
Don’t let me go another day without expressing my love to my man.
My man is the biggest gift you gave to me Lord.
He loves his parents, I love my parents too.
Both of us love food and travel, we are very grateful for the wonderful opportunities that you have given us.
Man is INFJ, woman is ENFP,
both of us are idealist and the personality test said we are suitable for one another.

Blueroselady wants so much to have full trust in You Lord and in my man.
That GOD WILL PROVIDE to us.
Please help Blueroselady to be more loving and not chasing worldly things.

My man has taught me many beautiful things in life:
1. It is OK not to be the best in the worldly matters, my man will still love and support Blueroselady.
2. the importance of work life balance.
3. the meaning of family with you Lord.

Please give me courage and eloquence to say exactly what I feel.

CS Lewis prayer and quotes from friends

leave a comment »

“I asked God for strength that I might achieve.
I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.

I asked for health that I might do greater things.
I was given infirmity that I might do better things.

I asked for riches that I might be happy.
I was given poverty that I might be wise.

I asked for power that I might have the praise of men.
I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God.

I asked for all things that I might enjoy life.
I was given life that I might enjoy all things.

I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am, among all men, most richly blessed.”

CS Lewis
