How to be an expert in a month?

leave a comment »

In my current profession, people have spent years, even decades, to become an expert.
Even among the experts, there can be opposing opinions on particular topic(s).

This post is inspired by what Tim Ferriss wrote in his book The 4-hour workweek (selling at US$ 22), page 170 (automation section), on how to be an expert in 4 weeks.
Tim’s strategies made me think twice to believe that someone when s/he claims that he is an expert.
Often, those who are PERCEIVED as experts tend to be better sellers than those who are really experts.
Note: there can be an overlap between perceived and real experts. Think of Venn diagram.
To be very successful, one has lie in the overlap region in the Venn diagram.

How to recognize PERCEIVED experts (that sell)?
1. affiliations
2. client lists
3. credentials (have given talks, written articles)
4. media coverage / features

Tim’s strategies will not work on fields like medicine or law, in which one needs to have M.D. or J.D. respectively.
However, his strategies can work on many fields, e.g. relationship, business, management.

Here, I combine his strategies with few ideas of mine:
1. AFFILIATIONS.
Join 2 / 3 related trade / professional organizations.
Quick, online, use credit cards.
2. SELECTIVE READING and SIMPLIFY.
Read 3 top-selling books on my topic.
Search historical New York Times bestseller lists online.
Like an hourglass, simplify / summarize each book on 1 page, so that I can elaborate them later (up to hours).
3. TALK.
3a. Give 1 free 1-to-3 hour talk at top universities.
Use posters / mass emails / social media (e.g. facebook, twitter) / viral marketing to advertise.
3b. Give free talk to (a min of 2) top companies.
Tell the companies that I have done steps 1 and 3a.
Companies may prefer speakers who do not (hard) sell products / services.
Appeal to the companies through my reason to get additional non-academic speaking experience.
3c. Give popular talks, e.g. TED talks.
4. WRITE and PUBLISH.
Write 1 or 2 articles on my topics for magazines / newspapers.
To be credible, cite my accomplishment in steps 1-3.
Alternatively, offer to interview a known expert and write the article.
5. join ProfNet
Must do research (e.g. online) to respond to journalist queries.
To be credible, cite my accomplishment in steps 1-4.

More on step 2:
People may read and just acquire information (which they may later forget), without converting them into knowledge and wisdom, and more importantly, into action.
When we read to summarize, we think on the important points, hence transforming the information into our own knowledge and wisdom.

About (last revised in April 2012)

with one comment

Our nature does produce roses, but not blue roses.

Human beings want things that they do not have, so scientists genetically engineer blue roses.

Blue roses are cherished and treasured because they are rare.
It is common to spray white roses into blue roses, yet blue roses that grow from the plant are more endearing.

My best friend called me blueroselady because I am a product of nature and nurture with gigantic love, unshakeable faith, and everlasting hope for life.

My dear friend, I love you always.

My love includes

  1. betterment of our world.

Reflections of 2010

I feel that I have no control over my studies. Honestly, if you ask me what my advices would be to those aspiring knowledge seekers, it is better to do a master (by coursework) than to do a doctorate degree. In a doctorate degree, your destiny is somehow determined by other people. Since we have taken these paths, and we are close the finish line (though our bosses love to extend our finish line). What can we do? Surrender everything to God (an answer to console ourselves) and try our best (a diplomatic answer).

In terms of family, I managed to spend Lunar New Year together this year (it is called Seollal in Korean). Since I am now living closed to my parents (well relatively short distance flight compared to trans-Atlantic/Pacific flights), I want to visit them every Lunar New Year. Since 1999 until 2006, I only spent one Lunar New Year with them. I also spent the 2008 and 2009 away from my parents. God taught us that family is more important than work (career), so this way I am doing more of God’s will. This summer, I met a Taiwanese middle-age woman, formerly from a lab of my grand-supervisor in Harvard, who told me that no matter how busy she is, she will always visit her parents. Thanks to the uplanned Seattle transit by United Airlines, I met a Hong Kong grand-mother who visited her parents in Toronto. With God’s blessings, I look forward to bringing my parents to enjoy vibrant Lunar New Year in our ancestor land.

Almost 5 years ago, I told Darling my 3 dream destinations. Honestly, none of them has been fulfilled. It is okay, I will still keep these dreams. Yet, God has been so genereous to me, to visit places that I have never heard of, from Cappadocia to Cyprus; to meet and work with people from different races, cultural and education backgrounds, religions (including atheists), fame and fortune status. I also started to dream to visit Antarctica, a land where no nation claims sovereignty.

I look forward to opportunities to grow with God, with Darling, and making fruitful contributions in this life. God thank you for your blessings, and in our difficulties, we seek and trust You.

In terms of career wise, our hopes are to finish our studies. We believe that God will provide to us, and we will put our efforts through hardworking, smartworking, learning humbly, and having grateful hearts.

Dec 29th: Darling told me that I have potential to do part-time selling cosmetics. I could potentially attract rich ladies from my birth country.
