Things to do at age 32-47 (1.5 precious decade)

leave a comment »

  1. Be grateful. Gratitude can soothe your desire and competitiveness. More importantly, gratitude is the root of happiness.
  2. Love yourself. Stand up for yourself for things that matter. Get out of a bad relationship.
  3. Believe that you are beautiful.
  4. Believe in miracles. “永远相信,美好的事情即将发生”
  5. Travel and continuously learn and learn how to learn (meta learning). “Investing in yourself is the best investment you will ever make. It will not only improve your life, it will improve the lives of all those around you.” ~ God via Robin S. Sharma | Learn new languages by immersion.
  6. Love your work. If you cannot do what you love, at least love what you do. According to Frankl, “We can discover this meaning in life in three different ways: (1) by creating a work or doing a deed; (2) by experiencing something or encountering someone; and (3) by the attitude we take toward unavoidable suffering”
  7. Take (at least a big) risk(s) to realize your dreams, step by step strategically. Be courageous to explicitly/implicitly express “I love you”. When you’re old, you won’t care if your love wasn’t returned — only that you made it known how you felt.
  8. Be thick face enough not to care too much about what other people think.
  9. Plant kindness. Do your best to ensure that those who are less fortunate than you, believe that there are sunshine and beauty in this world.
  10. Build connection capital. Connection here refers to genuine and authentic relationships, true friendships.
  11. Cherish people, use things (not the other way round).
  12. Appreciate now and here, the moment, the nature and beauty in the forms of visuals, arts, music, delicious cuisine.
  13. Master the art of endurance.
  14. View a painful experience as an avenue to increase your wisdom.
  15. Move / exercise / dance / walk / hike

Decluttering in autumn 2013

leave a comment »

I love to remove clutters (declutter),
it cleans my physical, spiritual, and emotional life.

Decluttering allows us to realize that life is full of delightful treasures, if we take a moment to look around.

Cool stuff:
# DNA-based computers. Leonard Adleman.
# Self-tracking / health-tracking devices. Up wristband.
# portfolio career.
# What heals the soul, heals the mind and body as well.

Interesting quotes:
# Time is most definitely a thief.
Questions: What is the longest yet the shortest? What is the fastest yet the slowest?
Answer: TIME

Useful tips:
# Be careful! Over use of medication (e.g. paracetamol), either intentionally or accidentally, may damage liver.
# To fight pimples and minimize scar, I have used tea tree oil and aloe vera.
# Try to move after sitting for 45 minutes, e.g. while travelling on long-distance flight. In terms of radiation, 7 hour flight ~= an X-ray session.

Inspiring people:
# Bernie S. Siegel
# Christine Ong of UBS Wealth Management Singapore
# Reene Ho-Phang

Some random muses and reflections …

@~@ On life
An event that at first seem to be unfortunate / undesirable may actually provide surprising advantages, e.g. autumn 2007 (that affects the next 7 years).

@~@ On being unique
It is a great thing to be unique or different.
The grown ups often tell any kid (e.g. a 6 year old) that it is great to be yourself.
Be unique.
However, the goal of many grown-ups in life is to fit in.

@~@ On career
A career for life vs portfolio careers.

@~@ On gifts
Some people (e.g. KS) value expensive gifts. In case of KS, he acknowledged the hardship in his early life.
Some people (e.g. KF) value heartfelt letter of appreciation much more than expensive gifts. Possibly, people who are relatively richer than me in material wealth and assume leadership roles (e.g. my direct boss in 2013) have similar perspectives as KF does.

@~@ On travel destinations
Some destinations wow me and are perhaps best to be visited once over a short period of time (instead of residing there) in entire life, due to extreme weather conditions or high living expenses. For example, Cappadocia and Antarctica.

What’s next?
# Deal constructively with criticism. Give constructive criticism.
# What are you going to do for the rest of your life? (A question I wrote in a note taken in Switzerland)
# DO, don’t dream.

Happiness exercise: Describe yourself in positive ways

leave a comment »

Happiness means differently to different people.
To some people,
happiness means a combination of the followings:# Finding love & happily married
# Having children, grandchildren, great grandchildren
# Good health
# Be financially well-off
# Enjoying a successful career
# Ability to maintain work-life harmony
# Happy relationships with extended family (ie. parents, grandparents, siblings, nephews, etc)
# Fulfilling friendships
# Making a difference to the world. You laugh … yes, many people, including me, set their dreams so high (and hence raising the standards of attaining their happiness).

To sum up, happiness is fundamentally related to health, wealth, and children.

Since happiness is related to so wide and diverse areas of our lives, how can we work on each area of importance to us? How to prioritize?
I believe in exercises / practice. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to give birth to a real talent.
Sincerely, I want you to master the art and science of happiness,
so that you can choose to be happy
even in the face of difficult circumstances and being overwhelmed by negative emotions.

In my designed series of happiness exercises, I would share numerous effective and tested exercise to enjoy happiness in your life.

Today exercise is to describe yourself in positive ways. Write to yourself. List your favorite attributes, your achievements, your roles, your love, and anything elseo about you.

Herein, I do the exercise on myself (in the autumn of 2013)

I am …
# a mother
# a daughter
# a wife
# a student of Coursera, edX
# a researcher
# a storyteller
# an author
# an ex-artist

I love …
# people who love me & whom I love.
You can never replace anyone because everyone is made up of such beautiful specific details.” Before Sunset (2004)
# food (especially healthy affordable food and desserts)
# simplicity
# diversity
# reading (and writing) and hence books
# gardens & parks in spring & summer, in early mornings & late afternoons
# philosophy of life
# giving smiles, talks in front of groups
# learning diverse things. I believe in the “See one, Do one, Teach one” model.
# dreams
# personal development, making a syllabus for life / bucket list / life planning
# entrepreneurship + unconventional work
# (and honestly sometimes fear) change / dynamics.
The only constant is change, continuing change, inevitable change, that is the dominant factor in society today. No sensible decision can be made any longer without taking into account not only the world as it is, but the world as it will be.” Isaac Asimov

I used to love …
# travel
# photography
# fireworks
# movies
But now they are not on top of my priorities.

People who have inspired me (non-exhaustively) include:
# Anthony Robbins
# Cayden Chang
# Chris Guillebeau
# Danah Zohar
# Dale Carnegie
# Dong Mingzhu 董明珠
# Goldie Hawn
# Jean Maalouf
# Jessie Louise Yancey-Siegel, affectionately known as Weezie
# Josh Kaufmann
# Joseph Murphy
# Leo Babauta
# Leong Kaiwen
# Louise Hay
# Luciano Passuello
# Michael Ellsberg
# Napoleon Hill
# Robert Cialdini
# Tahir
# Thich Nhat Hanh
# Tim Ferriss
These people are my brothers / sisters, my mentors, my dearest friends.

Things that I want to have / have more / give more to others:
@~@ Happiness
@~@ Health
@~@ Optimism & Hope
@~@ Gratitude
@~@ Kindness e.g. smile
@~@ Empathy e.g. a listening ear
@~@ Wealth
@~@ Wisdom
@~@ Courage e.g. to make new friends

Things that I want to remove / reduce :
@~@ Fear
@~@ Sadness
@~@ Anger

Benefits of being pregnant

leave a comment »

Growing life. Loving someone without being able to see him yet.
People are nicer to me. Parents give me nutritious food, Mom bought me new maternity wear. Boss is less demanding. Kind strangers give me a seat on public train.
I am allowed to eat more by my man. Normally, if we share food, he will eat 2/3 and I eat 1/3.
No longer afraid of cold. I used to be afraid of low temperature, when people wear 2 layers, I have to wear 3 layers.
Enlarged breasts. My bra size increases by n_now – n_before = 4, cup size increases by 2 alphabets.

世上不劳而获的,我想只有父母的爱。
A joke: But part of you (before you were fertilized) swam really hard, so there is no free lunch in this world.

@~@
An admirer HY graduated this month a year ago and brought his parents around. I am proud of you!
Love Story(1970) – Theme From Love Story (Finale)

I am sorry that I did not say NO well, hope that I would not hurt you too much. His Dad has artistic interest, he has musical interest, all of you seem so talented to me.
Honestly, I can be a hard core geek, so I was looking for a non-geek.

Sometimes life can overwhelm you with work.
Just prioritize and knock things out 1 at a time.

May 15th
I suffered a sudden sharp facial pain or headache during descent, which increases as the aircraft approaches ground level.
This is termed as aerosinusitis.
Particularly for my case was sinus frontalis.
Perhaps, I had suffered from nose blocking for the past few days. How to treat? The air stewardess gave me a sweet.

This indicates that I have a vulnerable sinus. Thus, I must be more careful than others.
How to prevent in the future?
Chronic sinusitis is a condition that is present for more than three months. My pain subsided after the plan landed, so I am OK.

Note: Inflammations of the frontal sinus can give rise to serious complications, as it is in close proximity to the orbit and cranial cavity (orbital cellulitis, epidural and subdural abscess,
meningitis).

Install VLC Media Player so that I can listen to my voice notes taken using BB (in im laptop).

I win Revlon gift set.
Though the collection site is remote (hence it took a morning in the 1st week of May), yet I met a heroine of mine today (a female driver who earns $1,200 monthly). Without her, I would have to walk in heavy rain. Thank you!

New eyeshadow (Revlon CustomEyes 020 Naturally Glamorous): Keep. It is time to throw / give away my old, very seldom use eyeshadow. New lipstick: macaroon. will give away as a gift. My lips are naturally red. I love my lips. I am loyal to my only lipstick that can change color according to the layers of application.
New mascara (001 blackest black): it is time to throw away old clotted dried mascara. Before I throw them away, I can declot and create an art piece.
New foundation (Revlon PhotoReady 006 Medium Beige): to give away, does not match my skin tone (I wish it is 001 Ivory). I love my Kose foundation.
Revlon 020 Tawny Peach powder blush: Ultra-soft powder blush adds a natural burst of color to cheeks. Blends smoothly and easily for a streak-free finish.
Revlon beyond natural smoothing primer: to apply before foundation.

Tips: kind words

leave a comment »

Quoting Mother Teresa, kind words can be easy and short to say, but their effects are everlasting. Please correct me if I am wrong.

(1) MAXIMIZE USAGE of POSITIVE words, MINIMIZE NEGATIVE words

One of my colleagues RR used the words “nasty” quite often during our discussions, and it somehow discouraged me. Not to worry, I have another layer of defense: intrinsically I will not be affected by what others say.
My goal is clear: to get our project completed.

(2) Please, Thank You, Sorry
