When she was 9 years old she won a provincial junior championship but was denied a place on the provincial team because she was too short. In 1988, when she was 13 years old, Deng won the national championship, but was refused a spot on the national team because she was too short. The national coaching staff finally gave in and, in 1989, Deng, still only 16 years old, teamed with Qiao Hong to win the doubles title at the world championships. In 1991, by which time she had topped out at 1.49 meters tall, Deng defeated Li Bun-hui of North Korea to win the singles world championship.

At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, she won a gold medal in both the singles and doubles competitions and repeated the feat at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. She also earned singles and doubles titles at the 1995 and 1997 world championships.

Retired: 24 years old

After retiring at the end of the 1997 season, Deng served on the International Olympic Committee’s ethics and athletes commissions.

Education:
a bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University, a master’s degree from the University of Nottingham
In 2008, she received PhD degree from Cambridge. Her thesis title is: “The impact of the Olympic Games on Chinese development: A multi-disciplinary analysis”.

Family:
In 2007, she married Lin Zhigang, also a table tennis player, and later gave birth to a baby boy.
