Korean Ondol: tips to maximize our home space

leave a comment »

Ondol is traditional Korean room with multiple functions. Rooms are not labeled or reserved for a specific purpose; there is no definite bedroom or dining room. Rather, tables and mats are brought in as needed. Most people sit and sleep on the floor using thick mats. Underneath the floors are stone or concrete flues (we can save on this since we are not experiencing harsh winter).

How to maximize our space at home?
No need bed frame.
Use foldable mattresses + mat beneath.
No need sofa.
Use stackable plastic chairs or rollable carpets with soft pillows.
Foldable tables and with wheels (for dining, studying).
Ceiling-high wardrobe.

Less furniture, more space. I like this idea.
The less we have, the more we feel.

Darling agrees that we adopt this ondol-kind of system, given that each tiny corner of houses is so expensive in this country. I look forward to owing a house, though we will be slaving for paying the mortgage. However, I believe that my income will not grow in a straight line, we will make it BIG.

Let’s learn from the Korean.
