Capsule camera: The journey into the self

leave a comment »

Cool name: Capsule endoscopy.
Inspiration source: Israel pavilion of Shanghai Expo 2010.
Useful for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Risk for adenocarcinoma of the esophagus.
Given Diagnostic System, featuring the PillCam video capsule, a disposable, miniature video camera contained in a capsule, which is ingested by the patient. The PillCamSB video capsule is the only naturally ingested method for direct visualization of the entire small intestine.

This type of examination is often done to find sources of bleeding or abdominal pain. The procedure was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001.

Capsule endoscopy can be used to diagnose problems in the small intestine, but unlike EGD or colonoscopy, cannot treat pathology that may be discovered.
A concept of a magnetically guided capsule endoscope, a potential alternative to esophagogastroduodenoscopy for stomach examination, was recently presented by Siemens.
Traditionally capsule endoscopes are moved only by peristaltic motion in the gastrointestinal tract. This often makes it difficult to guide the capsule to a specific location, and examinations are therefore limited to confined areas of the gastrointestinal tract, such as the small intestine.

Olympus: a leading manufacturer of endoscopes.

How the information captured by the camera be sent back to doctor? Is the info transfer real time? wireless, infra-red frequency, any suggestion?
Thanks Darling, you are so intelligent!

How does it work according to Laurie LaRusso of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center of Harvard Medical School?

You swallow the small capsule containing the camera. As the capsule is digested, it passes through your small intestine while the camera snaps pictures twice every second. The capsule is eventually excreted naturally, without you feeling anything unusual.

As the capsule moves through the GI tract, it sends signals to a data recorder worn on a belt around your waist. You wear the recorder for about eight hours as you go about your daily activities. The images stored on the data recorder can then be downloaded to a computer for viewing by a physician.
